20-year-old Engineering Student Allegedly Dies by Suicide in His Hostel Room in Jharkhand

A 20-year-old engineering student has allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room in Jharkhand’s Ranchi, police said on Wednesday. The student, identified as Piyush Raj, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room on Tuesday, a senior officer said. A native of Hesla village in Ramgarh district, he was studying at the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra.

“A suicide note was recovered from his room in which he sought an apology from his parents,” Ranchi Sadar Police Station in-charge Laxmikant told PTI.

The student didn’t attend college on Tuesday morning and was also absent from the evening assembly, the officer said. “When his colleagues visited the hostel in search of him, they found his room locked from inside. They immediately called the administration of the institution. They broke the lock and found him hanging from the ceiling fan,” he added.

He further added that as per preliminary investigation, the student was an introvert and did not interact much with other students on the campus. “In our preliminary investigation, it was found that the man was an introvert and he used to keep himself away from other students on the campus,” Laxmikant who was also a circle inspector of the Mesra area told the news agency.

Further investigation is underway. The student’s body has been sent to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for post-mortem examinations.

A few days ago, a second-year engineering student of Luckyreddy Balireddy Engineering College in Andhra’s NTR district allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room. Kishore Babu, inspector of police in Andhra Pradesh said the student identified as Roshini, was a resident of Muppalla village in Chanderlapadu Mandal. She was studying Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at the college and allegedly hanged herself in her hostel room.
