The biggest reason behind applying turmeric is that it is considered a sign of prosperity for the future life of the couple.

The wedding season is currently going on in India. The Haldi ceremony is a crucial part of every wedding. Have you ever wondered why this ceremony is held? Turmeric is used to fend off bad spirits. It is believed that it purifies the souls of the bride and groom on the wedding day. The ceremony is known as Haldi in North India, Manjha for Muslims, Supra nu Murat for Parsis, and Roce for Christians. It can be celebrated in the morning or one or two days before the wedding. In Parsi, this ceremony is celebrated differently. Five married women participate in this ritual, in which the bride sits in the centre, while being surrounded by the other four. In this, they prepare a paste of turmeric and milk using Khalbatto. In Hindu marriages, it is called the Haldi ceremony, in which turmeric is applied on the body of the bride and groom. Priest Shyama Baba has explained the significance of this ritual.

While talking to Local18, Priest Shyama Baba said that this ritual is very special in a marriage, which has no time limit. Initially, the mothers and family members pray to the god for the blessings. Turmeric is applied to the feet and body of the bride and groom. During this time, the women sing traditional songs related to the ritual. The siblings, parents and the other people who are present in this intimate ceremony apply turmeric to each other. As per the priest, the biggest reason behind applying turmeric is that it is considered a sign of prosperity for the future life of the couple.

Apart from the marriages, it is also used in other ceremonies of worship. It is also known for destroying the negative energy and helps in transmitting positive energy. The ceremony takes place in the presence of Lord Ganesha. It is offered and taken down with Lord Ganesha as a witness. The Haldi is taken down by the parents or the guardian to avoid accountability for any mistake made by the couple in the future. Priest Shyama Baba also said that turmeric is considered a sign of love. Priest said that the Haldi ritual is to be performed especially at 7 pm. The ritual can also be performed during the day.
