At the trailer launch of Indian Police Force, Shilpa Shetty Kundra revealed that she was supposed to collaborate with Rohit Shetty more than a decade-and-a-half ago Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006) but couldn’t do it because of date issues. And now, she has become the first female cop in Rohit’s cop universe and will be seen playing the tough and non-nonsense Tara Shetty in their upcoming Prime Video web series that releases on January 19.
In a recent chat with News18 Showsha, Shilpa exclusively says that she has no regrets about not being able to be a part of one of Bollywood’s most popular and biggest comedy franchises. “When Rohit had offered me the first Golmaal, it didn’t materialise because I was travelling and his dates didn’t work out. And I don’t regret anything in my life. I feel there’s a right time and place for everything,” she tells us.

While she agrees that their first collaboration took a little longer than expected, she feels that the wait was worth it. “You should ask Rohit what took us so long to come together. But what happens in our life is already predestined. When I look back, I feel happy that my journey with Rohit began with Tara Shetty, a part of his cop verse. It couldn’t have been better than this,” says Shilpa.
The Life In A Metro (2007) and Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) actor adds, “I always say that waqt se pehle aur qismat se zyada kabhi kisi ko kuch milta nahi hai. It took some time but I’m glad that we’re finally working together. And what a role to begin with! There couldn’t have been a better beginning!”
Shilpa and Rohit’s association, however, goes back to many decades. Her father Surendra Shetty and MB Shetty had worked together on Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) and Rafoo Chakkar (1975) where the former had assisted the action director. Shilpa shares that a lot of conversations on the sets of the Indian Police Force were also looking back at the old times and their dads.
“No one knew that our dads have worked together. Only his and my family knew. That’s where genes come into play. My father was actually a trained pilot and he met Shetty uncle somewhere and expressed his desire to be in the movies because he loved it. He was very good-looking and had a tough body. Shetty uncle wanted to make my father a villain,” she recalls.
Shilpa continues, “But mom didn’t quite like the scenario. So, he got back to doing what he was doing. My mom didn’t want him to be a pilot either because he nearly had a plane crash while doing VIP flying. Destiny has such a strange way of planning things for you. He became a businessman and the dream he harboured got manifested through me. So, se-lä-vē!”
